I noticed that someone previously commented on Tool’s placement in the chart, and how they found it weird because Tool is really complex music. I agree, Tool is complex, however their type of music is way less accessible to the people that would acknowledge how good Tool is, due to the hard nature of the music. They are in a category that a lot of intelligent people wouldn’t listen to. Bands like Opeth and Between the Buried and Me would also fall under this category. Therefore, a lot of their audience is simply people who like hard music, who id say overall are not the smartest of people. Now, when it comes to a band like Radiohead, they score high due to the fact that they are accessible, non-dance music. What this means is, only people that truly enjoy music for the sake of music (not as a backbeat) listen to them, and their music is very accessible (Easy to listen to). Radiohead is however very complex, but in a much more subtle way than Tool, so they fall into the Alternative and Pop category, and people of all musical intelligence can enjoy them.

I personally think that it makes a bit of sense. Who is more likely to study and get good grades: The quiet one in school who listens to sufjan, ben folds, and bob dylan or the party kid who listens to lil wayne and beyonce? race has nothing to do with it, mindset does.

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

I don’t think that a young Beethoven’s music lover is smarter than any other music fan. But I’m sure that the music is “young” or “old” like the brain of the listener. Perhaps that Mozart brain was “old” at 7 years (old) and he liked to compose merry melodies as survival reaction. To hear music is a brain exercise who evolves it musically like mathematics quiz evolve to smarter brain. Is’n it ??!!..

Very interesting insights. I don’t believe that music makes you dumber. If anything, it makes you smarter! If you really learn how to listen and listen very deeply to everything you are hearing, you are activating many parts of the brain at once. This is great for keeping your mind young and your memory sharp.
